Professional Medical Business Card Design: Dr Thabelo Makhupane Case Study

The Challenge

A business card for a medical practice needs to do more than simply share contact details. For many patients and parents, it becomes an important reference point when they need to book an appointment, check consulting times, or find the correct practice information quickly.

For Dr Thabelo Makhupane’s specialist paediatric practice in Lesotho, the main challenge was fitting a large amount of important information onto a small 90 mm × 50 mm card without making the design feel crowded.

The card needed to include the textless icon, the doctor’s full professional qualifications, practice numbers, operating hours, contact details, and location information. On top of that, the back of the card also needed to work as an appointment reminder, with a clean space where future appointments could be written down clearly.

The goal was to create something that looked calm, professional, and easy to use, while still making sure all the important information was readable at business card size.

The Solution

The final design uses a clean, structured layout to separate the information in a way that feels simple and easy to follow.

On the front of the card, the white upper section gives the logo and professional details enough breathing room, while the green footer area keeps the contact information neatly grouped together. This helps important details like phone numbers, consulting hours, and practice information stand out without overwhelming the design.

The typography was kept clean and professional, matching the soft medical feel of the logo while still making the card feel suitable for a specialist practice.

For the back of the card, I created a simple appointment grid that allows the card to serve a practical purpose as well. The spacing and line weights were carefully considered so that appointment details can be written in by hand without the design becoming messy or difficult to read.

Because this was designed for print, small technical details such as text size, spacing, bleed, and line thickness were also checked carefully to help avoid issues once the cards went to production.

The Result

The final business card is both professional and practical. It gives patients and parents the information they need, while also doubling as a useful appointment reminder that they are more likely to keep.

The design reflects the practice in a clear and approachable way: professional, organised, and caring. It also shows how much detail goes into even a small printed item, from layout balance and readability to print setup and final file preparation.
