Case Study: Crafting an Artisanal Identity for Mari-Handjies
Project Overview
Mari-Handjies is a local boutique bakery specializing in artisanal cakes, cookies, and bespoke gifts. The owner required a brand identity that felt as personal and “hand-made” as her products, centering on the name “Handjies” (Little Hands) to convey warmth and care.
The Design Pivot: From Concept to Versatility
The project began with a creative challenge: the client initially envisioned a full watercolor drawing style. While beautiful, watercolor can be difficult to replicate across different physical materials.
Through a collaborative process, we pivoted to a refined line art style. This allowed for a professional, scalable mark while still incorporating soft watercolor accents as background elements to maintain that original artistic vision.
Physical Branding & Packaging Innovation
A brand truly lives in its physical application. For Mari-Handjies, the design had to work across several unique touchpoints:
Custom Wrap-Around Packaging Seals: I developed a specialized sticker design consisting of a central circular logo with two elongated side strips. This “wrap-around” format serves as a functional seal for cake tins and gift boxes, providing a premium, secure finish to the packaging.
High-Visibility Lightbox: The logo’s clean line art was adapted for a physical lightbox. This application demonstrates the brand’s versatility, maintaining its elegance and legibility even when backlit in a retail environment.
Boutique Stickers: The primary badge format was optimized for cake box stickers, ensuring the brand is the first thing a customer sees when receiving their order.
Technical Deliverables
To ensure Mari-Handjies was prepared for both digital and physical growth, I provided a comprehensive asset package:
Vector Formats: Essential for the production of the lightbox and large-scale vinyls.
High-Resolution Print Files: Optimized for packaging seals and marketing collateral.
Web-Optimized Assets: Lightweight files for social media and digital storefronts.
